I remember Jamie Hewlett from his Tank Girl work. But when he partnered with Damon Albarn to create the first, successful virtual band known only as the Gorillaz back in 2001, he was forever etched in illustration and animation lore as one of the greats. Ahead of it’s time (after After Watanabe’s Sharon Apple of course, lol), the Gorillaz went on to successfully sell over 7 million copies of their debut album, break a Guiness World Record and withdrawn Mercury Prize (at the band’s request). Their followup went 5 times platinum in the UK alone and 2-times platinum in the US, nabbing 5 grammy nods and winning one.

This was one of my favorite videos!

god I remember seeing this video and I had NO idea animation could be used to do something like this.

It was so badass, so different, so totally apart from any other music video I had ever seen up til then that always rather scant animation in it… this was actually animated. Of course, there was some television animated stuff that was thematically similar but imagine seeing Daria or something from MTV given the budget you’d see in an animated movie. WHAT!?

I don’t know if there really was the “animated music video” before Gorillaz made it into something. There were animated music videos, sure, but they made it a THING. It was like an experience.

It’s hard to explain the eye-poppingness that this video inspired in a bunch of animation people my age. I’m really lucky to have pretty much been there with Gorillaz from the beginning to the end. To be honest I sort of miss it :(

The other night, dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
But when I woke, dear,
I was mistaken.
So I bowed my head and cried.
